Chevrolet UAE has launched the 2018 Chevrolet Equinox in the Middle East recently. The SUV has been redesigned to be lighter and graceful. Equal to the weight of a piano, the SUV has lost 180 kilograms of weight. Behind this drop in mass is Equinox’s new light-weight body structure which was specifically crafted to be light and meet the current safety standards.
The intelligent design was achieved through much hard-work by designers and engineers who used computer programs to aid them in this diligent task. Engineers applied state of the art materials like aluminum and steel with a mix of ingenious engineering methods and tactics including metal inert gas welding, laser brazing and more.
All the ingredients to this concoction resulted in a safe and nimble vehicle. The addition of ultra-strength steel gives the structure new-found strength that is capable to protect the passengers inside. The 2018 Chevrolet Equinox has a very high center of gravity that has given the engineers enough liberty to focus more on ride comfort and maneuverability.
The lightweight enhances the performance of the drivetrain. Two new turbocharged 4-cylinder gasoline engines are available, including a 1.5-liter engine producing 170 hp and 203 lb-ft of torque, and a 2.0-liter engine with a power output of about 252 hp and 260 lb-ft. For U.S. markets, a 1.6-liter turbodiesel I-4 also graces the Equinox generating 136 hp and 236 lb-ft. The 2.0-liter variant is mated to a new nine-speed automatic transmission, while the smaller gasoline engine and the diesel variant both are paired with a six- speed automatic. Fuel economy of up to 15 KM/L is an excellent figure for a turbo engine.
