2021 BMW 4 Series Coupe Debuts With Big Kidney Grille, New Mild-Hybrid Engine

The German automaker has introduced the 2021 BMW 4 Series Coupe with new technology, updated dynamics, and a new mild-hybrid engine. Borrowing its looks as well as dynamics from Concept 4, it has a drag coefficient of 0.25, Adaptive LED headlights, 18-inch alloy wheels, and distinct L-shaped taillights.

The most visible change however is the large kidney grilles, which serve a good purpose. They offer the engine more air, thus improving their performance.

The entry-level BMW 430i and 430i xDrive now get a revised 2.0L turbocharged four-cylinder pumping out 255 horsepower and 399 newton-meters of torque, which is 7 hp and 36 lb-ft more than the outgoing model. It will enable the car to hit 96 km/h from standstill in 5.5 seconds. The xDrive does the same in 5.3 seconds and tops out at 250 km/h.

However, what profits most from the big kidneys is the 3.0L V6 engine with 48-volt mild-hybrid technology. Pumping power in the M440i xDrive, the engine can generate 382 hp and 500 Nm of torque. The 48-volt starter-generator alone creates 11 horsepower. All this improves the acceleration to 96 km/h in 4.3 seconds.

All the engines mate to an eight-speed automatic transmission and are available in both rear- and all-wheel-drive layouts.

Some of the new facilities in the new Coupe include the cloud-based navigation system, and the new-gen BMW head-up display. The Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard. In the safety department, the car boasts front collision warning with automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning with steering assist, and speed limit information. For added safety, buyers can opt for the Driving Assistance Professional package, which includes adaptive cruise control with stop and go, lane-keep assist with side collision avoidance, and rear automatic emergency braking.

The entry-level 2021 BMW 4 Series Coupe with rear-wheel drive will cost $45,600 (excluding $995 destination fee). The 430i xDrive starts at $47,600, while top of the line M440i xDrive sports $58,500 price tag. Expect the new 4 Series Coupe to hit the dealerships in the US in October. BMW did not disclose when they plan to launch the coupe in the Middle East.
