Mercedes-Benz may have joined the EV bandwagon a little late than the other automakers but they have done it in style. Meet the brand’s electric flagship, the 2022 Mercedes-Benz EQS, the first under the EQ emblem boasting 770 kilometers (478 miles) of drive range on the WLTP cycle, a technologically advanced interior, and a record-breaking 0.20 drag coefficient. The full-size all-electric luxury sedan is the first vehicle from Mercedes to feature MBUX Hyperscreen. It is a huge glass dashboard featuring three different displays – an instrument cluster, center infotainment center, and auxiliary passenger-side touchscreen.
Trim Levels and Power
The 2022 Mercedes-Benz EQS comes in only two models, both taking power from a 108.7-kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery. The entry-level EQS 450+ has a single electric motor fixed on the rear axle creating 329 horsepower and 406 pound-feet (245 kilowatts and 550 newton-meters). The EQS 580 4MATIC comes with a two-motor setup to power all the wheels, generating 516 hp and 611 lb-ft (385 kW and 828 Nm). With this power, the sedan can go from zero to 60 mph in only 4.1 seconds.
Drive Range and Battery Recharge
What makes the 2022 Mercedes-Benz more desirable is its drive range. The company says its first dedicated electric vehicle can deliver 770 kilometers (or 478 miles) on the WLTP cycle. As a comparison, the Tesla Model S Long Range covers 379 miles.
While the large battery helps in achieving more range, the car’s exceptional aerodynamic efficiency with a drag coefficient of 0.20 also assists a lot. Mercedes says it is the world’s lowest drag coefficient for any car.
Talking about the battery recharge, the 2022 Mercedes-Benz EQS can refill the juice from 10 to 80 percent in 35 minutes through a 110-kW DC fast charging. Charging it on a 240-volt household wallbox will take a little over 11 hours, which is good for off-peak all-night charging. The company will likely take assistance from a public charging provider before the car’s arrival.
Futuristic Design
The automaker made sure that the 2022 Mercedes-Benz EQS look different from other offerings in the brand’s lineup. Thanks to the dedicated all-electric platform, the designers were able to push the hoodline down and the windshield forward. In the meantime, an arched roofline and liftback are what make a “one-bow” shape.
Mercedes also reveals, “body creases have had their day at Mercedes-Benz,” so the sedan receives an amazingly slippery styling. On the front is a shiny black panel, a big Mercedes emblem, with small three-pointed stars etched into the covering below.
