A new Alfa Romeo Giulia is being cooked up in the Italian automaker’s factory and word on the street is that it will feature a Formula 1-inspired energy recovery system (ERS) as well as a powerful powertrain.

Reports indicate that two new powertrains are being developed for the Giulia and each of them will incorporate the ERS system. The first unit will be based on the 276bhp 2.0-liter turbo petrol engine used in Giulia Veloce sedan while the other will be based on the 2.9-liter turbo V-6 found in the Giulia Quadrifoglio.

The automaker will heavily upgrade these engines for a higher power output. The 2.0-liter engine is expected to deliver 345 bhp while the V6 unit will offer 641 horsepower. This upgraded V6 engine would make it the most powerful road-legal Alfa Romeo Giulia.

Moreover, it will also make the new Alfa Romeo Giulia substantially more powerful than some of its main rivals such as BMW M4 DTM which produces 493 hp, the Audi RS5 which delivers 444 bhp, and the Mercedes-AMG C63 S Coupe which churns out 503 hp.

The new Giulia Coupe will boast some exterior updates as well as a new roofline, revised quarter panels, and lengthy doors. Expect the new Alfa Romeo Giulia coupe to debut later this year.
